I’d like to invite you and Pack 67 in general to the DuPage Engineers’ Week that will be on Feb 25 at the IIT Wheaton “Rice” campus. Here is a short video of last year’s event. Many engineering associations come and give interactive demos to teach different aspects of engineering and science to kids.

Ice Skating… Mark your calendars for noon on Monday, March 5 (Casimir Pulaski Day) for our Pack 67 Ice Skating Outing at the Franklin Park Ice Arena. More details to be announced soon.

Cost is $8 for one bowler, $5 for each additional bowler; remainder covered by Pack 67

Thatcher Woods

The Cub Scout Winter Blast is an event held each year by the Twin Lakes District of the Des Plaines Valley Council. In other words, there will be several other cub scout packs besides our own. But the event is conveniently (for us!) held right in our own Thatcher Woods, in the open field off of the north side of Chicago Ave (across from the Trailside Museum).

The scouts get to take part in a variety of fun activities, including Eskimo Hockey, Tundra Tire Roll, Dog Sled Race, Yukon Duit, Arctic Frisbee, Saskatoon Soccer, and Intuit Tug of War. A snack and a patch for each scout are included.

Cost is $6 per child, but Pack 67 is covering the cost for you! Take advantage of the free fun!

If you are interested in attending… please email Mark (chs_bambui@yahoo.com) by the end of this week. Let him know the number of scouts, and whether an adult can stay to chaperone (i.e. walk around with) a group of five scouts from our pack.

Setup: Friday Night 1/27 7:00 – 9:00
The Bear den scouts and their parents are responsible for setup on Friday night, but anyone interested in helping is welcome to join.

Weigh-In: Saturday 1/27 11:00 – 12:30
You can check-in early and return later for lunch and racing or just check-in closer to deadline. You must register your car and weigh it on the official scale, 5 ounce MAX. Hot glue and some tools will be available for last minute tune-ups. Small +/- adjustments  can be made to your car at the scale, but once you check it in, it is quarantined and can no longer be altered.

 Lunch: 1:00
Luncheon served, courtesy of the Pack. Bring your family.

Races Begin: 2:00
There are several heats, depending on number of entries. Plan on running until 4PM or later to awards.

Awards: Around 4:00 (depending on progress of the races)
There are several trophy categories including 1st-3rd Overall Pack, 1st-3rd Each Den, 1st-2nd Most Creative, 1st-2nd Most Original, 1st-2nd Most Realistic, Coolest and Silliest.

Cleanup
Anyone who can stick around after the awards to help with cleanup gets a big pat on the back. The more help, the quicker we can all get out!

A note on derby technology…
Those of you have been around for past derbies are aware that technical difficulties with the track electronics have almost reach “pack tradition” status. Although the electronics are thoroughly tested and verified during setup the night before, gremlins sneak into the gym overnight and invariably, what was working perfectly Friday night fails miserably on Saturday afternoon. People have suggested buying all new electronics, not realizing we did exactly that last year and still had the same problems! Last year we fell back to Plan B, where we simply eyeballed the order of finish for each heat and manually entered the results into the software. It was the smoothest and quickest-run derby in recent history. This year we are going to once again try to make sure the electronics are working on Friday night, but at the first sign of trouble on Saturday, it’s Plan B once again. We will do our best to make sure people aren’t sitting around for an hour+ waiting for the races to begin. Thanks in advance for your patience!
